SNL: Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga

May 22, 2011

I sat down last night to watch the season finale of SNL, and wouldn’t you know it, about two minutes into the intro our local affiliate broke into the livecast because tornadoes were rolling through the Midwest. The weather forecasters stayed on for the rest of the show, so I didn’t get to watch the finale. Thankfully Hulu and the SNL website have most of the clips available, and I watched them all this morning.

Overall, pretty funny stuff. This was easily one of the best, if not the best episode of the season. Of course, that is not a high bar to hurdle. It has been a dismal season for the most part, so it was nice to see the show go out on a high note. Host Justin Timberlake is an SNL treasure at this point, and Lady Gaga was game to participate in more than one skit.

Timberlake sang and danced his way through his monologue, looking dapper in a well-fitted suit.

The digital short reprised Andy Samberg and Timberlake’s characters from ‘Dick in a box‘and ‘Mother Lover‘. Patricia Clarkson and Susan Sarandon make brief cameos, but the skit entitled “3-Way (The Golden Rule)” is all about Lady Gaga, who participates in a three way with the two men. ¬†A decent digital skit.

One of my favorite recurring skits is ‘Amusement Park Ride’ where the creepy animatronic people take on a life of their own. Last night’s skit might have been better than the original. The man on the ride (Jason Sudeikis) is appropriately skeeved out, while his lady friend is oblivious.

Seth Myers tore into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s indiscretions on Weekend Update. Loved how he used the movie titles toward the end.

Nicholas Cage (Andy Samberg) returned to weekend update, and his speech on nomadic eyebrows was to die for.

A Barry Gibb talk show skit was just ho-hum to me, but I know some people enjoyed it, so see for yourself.

Lady Gaga performed three songs: ‘Judas’, ‘Edge of Glory’ and ‘Born This Way’. I found ‘Born This Way’ to be the most enjoyable. It was energetic, and Gaga really showed off her performing skills. She is a true entertainer.

She also served well in the comedy skits she appeared in. I present to you, ‘What’s Your Name’. Timberlake and Gaga play themselves on a game show. Timberlake cannot remember the name of some girl he just slept with, or his former bandmate, but Gaga knows the name of all of her fans.

So SNL is now on hiatus until next season. Can we just have these two host from now on, and spare us the pain of another uneven season?

Being 60, I can say I have watched SNL from its beginnings. I concur with your assessment of the season, and found the new actors woefully inadequate and ineffective.

Specifically though for last night Gaga and Timberlake were terrific individually and together on screen. As odd as it may be for someone my age, I find her to be an amazing and wonderful entertainer and young lady.

Rod I agree with you. They had such great chemistry and I think if was one of the best finales in a long time. I loved Jimmy Fallon coming on and Bradly Cooper making an appearance. My favorite skit was JT and Gaga doing the Liquor store with the costumes at the mall. Hysterical!!
