Kelly Osbourne Might Get Gastric Bypass Surgery. NO!

This makes me all kinds of sad if it is true. Kelly Osbourne is supposedly considering gastric bypass surgery. Have you seen her lately?  She looks fantastic!  She has truly been an inspiration as of late.

After shedding her baby fat, Kelly has emerged as svelte (but not overly so) beauty.  She has curves, and she looks great. She has carved out a name for herself in the world of fashion, co-hosting Fashion Police on E! Television, appearing on the red carpet at the Oscars and more.  Her weight loss was gradual and hard-earned.

Now comes word that Kelly has gained a few pounds back, and in a fit of panic is considering gastric bypass surgery.  I thought the procedure was reserved for those who are morbidly obese, and Kelly certainly never fit in that category.  I’m sure there is some unethical/greedy doctor who would green light the procedure but I will be very disappointed.  Kelly has been a free spirit, and very outspoken on a variety of topics. How tragic if she morphs into just another neurotic Hollywood starlet.

It is reported on Digital Spy that Kelly has gained a stone of weight (that’s about 14 pounds for all you Americans).  In addition to considering the surgery, she plans to return to the gym routine that helped her lose the weight in the first place.  There’s a novel idea-do something sensible and gradual before rushing into a dangerous and unnecessary procedure.

Kelly is currently the face of Madonna’s new fashion line, adding to the pressure to remain thin. What do you think of all this?  If women Kelly’s size start getting these procedures, I think it sends a very dangerous message to young women who are already bombarded with unhealthy ideals.

The article reports that mom Sharon (no stranger to plastic surgery) is supportive of Kelly’s desires. Go figure.

First, I agree completely that she looks great now. Totally cute and healthy (whodathunk that 8 years ago), and to be considering something drastic like gastric bypass is absurd.

That said, I have known enough people who have struggled with weight, lost it, then gained it back to recognize the panic you mentioned. That’s what this is. She looks great now, but she’s not many years removed from being obese–she was WAY past “baby fat”.

Again, I hope it doesn’t happen, but it wouldn’t shock me if she went through with it. After doing so much work to lose the weight only to start gaining it back, a quick fix may seem easier to her than a lifelong struggle.
