SNL: Miley Cyrus

March 6, 2011

Did anyone else out there feel sorry for The Strokes?  How crappy is it that they had to appear on the episode with Miley Cyrus?  They were far and away the best thing about last night’s show, it was easily one of the weakest shows of the season.

I tried to give her a fair shake, but good lord she is annoying. I will give her props for being able to make fun of herself and her image. Miley was a good sport, and seemed game for whatever was thrown her way.

This episode seemed tired to me, partly because of all the Charlie Sheen jokes. With the current 24 hour news cycle obsessing over his every move, the jokes seemed so yesterday.  Everyone else has already done them to death. That being said, Bill Hader was pretty funny as Sheen in the cold open.  The skit was “Duh! Winning! With Charlie Sheen”.  The character hosted a slew of winners from the  week, including designer John Galliano, Christina Aguilera, and Lindsay Lohan.

The weekend update with Seth Meyers was chock-full-o’ Sheen jokes as well, but I did enjoy his assessment of the winners and losers surrounding the whole Sheen mess.

“The Miley Cyrus Show” this week kept Vanessa Bayer as Miley. The real Miley dressed up like guest Justin Bieber, and did a bangin’ impression.  See for yourself.

The only other skit worth mentioning was the “Disney Channel Acting School”.  It made fun of all the annoying cliches that litter every show on the network.

The Strokes performed two songs, “Under Cover of Darkness” and “Life is Simple in the Moonlight” (below).  What did you think of the show?

I thought that Julian’s voice was a bit off. He knew that he was singing badly, as you could tell from how disgusted he looked and the “f*ck it” at the ending.
What really made the show for me was the “happy birthday cal” at the end. Life is Simple in the Moonlight was a bit better…but overall unimpressive.
