Pop(ish)-Quiz: Scat(ish) Challenge
In vocal jazz, scat singing is vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all. Scat singing gives singers the ability to sing improvised melodies and rhythms, to create the equivalent of an instrumental solo using their voice. ~ Wikipedia
Below are segments from twelve different, not completely obscure, semi-recognizable pop(ish, depending on your age) songs, each containing (debatable & varying degrees of) scat. How many can you identify without (a) clicking on the links or (b) resorting to Google?
I predict that nobody will successfully identify all twelve songs without help.
And for what it’s worth, the difficult part of this post was not finding the “scat” (such as it is), but in arranging it into a quasi-poem/song of sorts. There’s plenty of scat to choose from, but selecting dissimilar scat that rhymes and flows…that was a little challenging.
boyzee boyzee bop, zitty… (another smooth transition)
Bop bop a lu bop a whop bam… (and another)
boom chagga lagga lagga, boom chagga lagga lagga, boom chagga lagga lagga boom <= scat by a stretch and/or a technicality (and debatable at that)
Post your hit:miss ratio in comments, if you’re proud of your effort!
* I am sorry. Really, and truly I am. That was/is arguably uncalled for. If it makes you feel any better, I couldn’t get the song out of my head after hearing it either.
