The 2011 Banned Words List

January 3, 2011

Since 1977, Lake Superior State University has been releasing a list of words that shall be banned for the following year. No, it’s not censorship, it’s mostly for fun. They collect all the annoying terms that have permeated the cultural landscape over the last year, and rightfully posit that we ban them from our vocabulary.

Here’s this year’s list of words:

  • Viral
  • Epic
  • Fail
  • Wow-factor
  • A-ha moment
  • Backstory
  • BFF (do people still use that?
  • Man up
  • Refudiate (Sarah Palin’s coined term)
  • Mama Grizzlies (never heard of this)
  • The American People
  • I’m just sayin’
  • Facebook/Google used as verbs
  • Live life to the fullest

What would you have banned this year? I vote for douche and douchebag, but the problem is that they so perfectly describe some people. I’ve yet to come up with an adequate substitute.
