Television Moments That May Be As Awkward As The Jake/Vienna Bachelor Thing

July 6, 2010

You saw it, didn’t you?  The painfully embarrassing public appearance of former betrothed couple Jake and Vienna acting like petulant children on national television, all the while making a mockery of relationships and engagements.

Congrats guys, you managed to provide a reality television low, which is quite an accomplishment in this day and age.  Consider yourselves the new litmus test for any public spat from here on out.  I’m sure your parents are proud. You can watch the whole unseemly incident  here.

While I cowered under my breakfast bar, trying to digest the horror that was taking place on national television, I got to thinking (always a dangerous thing in the Hood household, I know.)  What are some other television debacles that made me cringe?

Here you go.

Paula Deen getting hit by a ham

Equal parts horrifying and funny, this little mishap made me feel like a jackass for laughing, yet laugh I did.   Paula was classy as can be, despite the unwarranted encounter with a ham. One minute she is nonchalantly passing frozen ham down a human conveyor belt, the next she takes the full force of one straight to the nose.

Any morning segment with Hoda and Kathie Lee

I thought the SNL skits of these two and their zany morning antics was grossly exaggerated, per most SNL skits.  Then I saw these two imbeciles in action.  I weep tears o’ plenty for all the struggling news personalities who on a daily basis have to face the sad reality that these idiots are employed, and they are not.

Here’s some poor guest telling them to shut the hell up (for once) so he can talk.

Tom Cruise on Oprah

I know, this is such old news, but it truly was a train wreck of epic proportions.  Any respectable list must include it.  Since you have seen the incident at least a hundred times, here is Dane Cook on Jimmy Kimmel doing a parody of the most talked about freak out in television history.

The call that (finally) got Michael Savage fired from his show on MSNBC.

Michael Savage is hate spewing talk show host.  After 9/11, he got his own show on MSNBC.  Ever the charmer,  Savage called MSNBC reporter Ashleigh Banfield , “the mind slut with a big pair of glasses that they sent to Afghanistan,” adding, “She looks like she went from porno into reporting.”  Amazingly, this didn’t lead to him getting fired, but the following diatribe finally did him in.

The Crispin Glover incident on Letterman

Before Joaquin Phoenix, there was Crispin Glover. I still don’t know what to make of it.  Some people think he was acting, some think he was high, some think he was tripping acid.  Whatever the case, I wouldn’t call it entertaining as much as I call it really awkward to watch, and the guy’s reputation never fully recovered.

These are just a few that came to mind.  There are thousands more out there.  What have you witnessed on television that made you cringe?

    Well…I tried. I couldn’t get through their on-air bickering.

    Here’s my contribution:

It’s a bit more subtle, but I would argue that Letterman has a palpable disdain for Ms. Stewart (in her 2009 interview he seemed particularly put off by her not attending college). Anyways, she seems to be trying a little harder to open up this time around and he still seems kind of squicked by her. FUN.
