Happy Birthday Bob Marley!

February 6, 2010

Bob Marley: Singer, songwriter, guitarist, Rastafarian, member of the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame”, and according to Anthony Kiedis, a “Poet & Prophet” (1:18)

Today (Feb 6th) is Bob’s birthday, and if he were alive today, he’d be scratching the lid of his coffin 65 years old.

I’m not gonna lie to ya’ll, I’ve never been a huge fan.  When I thought of Bob Marley, I thought of “I Shot the Sheriff“, and pot, the former ranking significantly below the latter in terms of it’s overall stature with yours truly.  However, not long ago I stumbled across a few tunes (actually, the entire Bob Marley discography, which, as it happened, “fell off a truck”, and landed directly on my computer), and I was pleasantly surprised with what I found.

I’m now of the opinion that “I shot the Sheriff” is to Bob Marley what “Cheeseburger in Paradise” is to Jimmy Buffet: a barely forgivable anomaly.  Yeah, I’m aware that “Redemption Song” and “Three Little Birds” are kick-ass songs, but they weren’t, in and of themselves, enough for me to consider myself a fan.  But I think what I’ve discovered has tipped the scales, and that’s changed now, so lemme share with you a couple of my “new” favorite Bob Marley songs:

Keep on Moving“, for example

Stop.  I know what you’re going to say: “But Pants, aren’t you an atheist!  What’s with the whole, “Lord, I gotta keep on moving…” thing.  Isn’t that a bit hypocritical?”

No; it ain’t.  Technically, I’m a “freethinker”, of which “atheist” is a subset, which means I can listen to anything that catches my fancy.  Oh yeah, I just did do that.

Anyway, “Keep on Moving” is a great groove, but my personal favorite (so far), is “Dreamland

There’s a land that I have heard about
So far across the sea
To have you all, my dreamland
Would be like heaven to me

We’ll get our breakfast from the tree
We’ll get our honey from the bees
We’ll take a ride on the waterfalls
And all the glories, we’ll have them all

And we’ll live together on that dreamland
And have so much fun
Oh, what a time that will be
Oh yes, we’ll wait, wait, wait and see
We’ll count the stars up in the sky…

And surely we’ll never die…

That’s just pure, laid-back awesomeness right there!

Good call; that’s a groovy tune. That tune is just *screaming* to be re-mixed with a modern “dancy” feel to it. I dunno why, but I’m thinking Joss Stone could pull it off and make it sound like *she* wrote the song last week.

Or, [slaps forehead] how ’bout Ky-Mani Marley!!
