Episode Recaps: ‘The Office’ and ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’

The Office: “The Lover”

No one ever really takes Michael to task when he deserves it, and yet when he tries to find happiness, that’s when he gets comeuppance.

In “The Lover,” Jim and Pam return from their honeymoon and discover Michael’s been dating Pam’s mom. Pam, somewhat understandably, flips out, going into Feisty Pam mode and spending the rest of the episode shouting at Michael. The B plot involves Dwight bugging Jim’s office with a listening device not-so-cleverly disguised as a wooden duck (mallard).

Michael’s been especially obnoxious this season, so it’s nice to see him squirm a bit, whatever the context. It’s also nice to see someone else be the antagonist, and Jenna Fischer does a good job at being petulant. She doesn’t have the quiet intensity of Angela, but it’s a good change of pace.

This is a rewarding episode for Office fans. It doesn’t have any big-laugh moments like Niagra, but there’s a few laugh-out-loud moments involving Michael’s pseudo-reconciliation with Toby, both Michael and Pam slapping down Oscar, and Ryan’s hat.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: “The World Series Defense”

The show’s best moments typically center around the gang’s interaction with each other. When they’re forced into conflict with the real world, or worse yet, explain their latest shenanigans, it can get old fast.

In “The World Series Defense,” there’s a bit of both. The gang appears in court to fight a parking citation, which leads to an elaborate story involving grain alcohol, fumigated apartments, and the search for a secret underground tunnel between the Holiday Inn and Citizens Bank Park.

This is probably the weakest episode so far this season. There’s a memorable shot of Mac, Dee, and Frank succumbing to the fumigation and coming upon a dungeon of Phillies fans’ corpses, but overall it didn’t sit right with me. Having the gang atone for their behavior takes away the carefree charm that makes Sunny so endearing.

And I still don’t see what’s so funny about Green Man.
