Seriously, Does This Surprise Anyone?

By Shannon

tom-cruise-on-oprah-winfrey-show-again-no-sofa-jumping-this-timeYou know by now that many of us at frothy harbor a serious crush on American Psycho.  I would marry that movie if I could. Though it has been out since 2000, I still behold it with childlike wonder and reverence.

When news broke via that Christian Bale had studied a one Tom Cruise to nail his performance as the bat-shit crazy Patrick Bateman in said movie, I merely yawned.  You see, this is not news.  I have been prophesizing about the crazy of Tom since the days of Top Gun. I must admit I find it validating, though.

An excerpt from an interview with Mary Harron, the director from American Psycho:

How did you and Christian Bale develop his character in American Psycho?
It was definitely a process. We talked a lot, but he was in L.A. and I was in New York. We didn’t actually meet in person a lot, just talked on the phone. We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave. And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.

Makes perfect sense to me. Cruise is the perfect embodiment of an insane narcissist.

Well-played Shannon. It’s true, you have been on to his crazy from the onset of our frienship some 15 years ago (and long before that) validating indeed. It makes so much sense that Miles Fisher’s parodies of both Bateman and Cruise would be so excellent.
