Horror Whore: Shuttle

Shuttle is a satisfying ride

77074_aaColor me naive, but I found this movie entirely enjoyable.  It is extremely rare that I stumble upon a film that I don’t know anything about.  I was trolling some horror web sites, when I saw an ad for this movie.  Intrigued, I scribbled the name of the movie down on notepad, and promptly expedited it to the top of my netflix queue.

I watched the film that evening, and was genuinely shocked by the fact this didn’t get a proper theatrical run in the U.S.  It was vaguely reminiscent of Midnight Meat Train, another film that was jilted out of a theatrical run last year and starred current Hollywood it-boy Bradley Cooper. The two movies actually share actor Tony Curran, who plays a driver in both.

Shuttle begins with two young women in an airport  who have just returned from a weekend in Mexico.  While they are waiting for their luggage, they converse with two men who they had run into while on their vacation (a predictable obnoxious sex-hound, and the obligatory sweet/cute/endearing side kick).  When they try to catch a shuttle,  another driver approaches them and offers them a killer (pun intended) rate to transport them to their destination.  The two women agree to his offer, and at the last minute the men they were talking to squeeze onto the shuttle, visibly irritating the driver.

The rest of the movie consists of the driver taking the occupants of the shuttle on a hellish ride for the rest of the evening. He appears to have no motive behind his brutality toward the teenagers, and you will be scratching your head trying to figure out where the movie is going.   Shuttle kept me guessing until the last five minutes, when it concluded with a nifty and shocking twist.

Shuttle doesn’t have any well known actors, but the acting was  decent, and the heroine was quite charismatic.

The movie is prescient in topic, and the plot was completely original as far as horror movies go.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you are a horror fan.
