Catch up on Party Down
*This is my second suggestion of shows to watch during the summer television hiatus.
I’ve had a black hole in my heart where Arrested Development used to live ever since its unfortunate demise in 2006. It was one of my favorite television shows of all time, and it raised the bar for all other comedies that followed. I have been “chasing the dragon” so to speak ever since it aired its last episode. Three episodes into Party Down, I think I might have found a show worthy of my adoration.
Party Down is an original series that recently wrapped up its first season on the Starz network, and it is hilarious. The plot revolves around a group of caterers, a premise that is ripe for fodder. Throw in the fact that they are all out of work actors in LA and you’ve struck gold. Each episode is named for a different catering gig, and chronicles the events of the evening.
Frequent Judd Apatow collaborator Jane Lynch plays the matriarch of the posse, who has been there, done that and always has helpful advice and personal anecdotes about show business. She is absolutely hysterical as usual. The ensemble cast consists of a lot of character actors that are not household names, a fact that works in the shows favor.
Paul Rudd is one of the creators of the show, along with Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars). With guest cameos, a stellar cast, and a solid pedigree this show is likely to have staying power, and it has been renewed for a second season. Watch a few episodes of this show and you’ll be hooked. If you don’t have Starz, Party Down is now available on Netflix watch instantly.
