Gin and Juice
So, I have recently discovered that gin tastes really good with grapefruit juice. Despite my love for Snoop “Dee-oh-double-g” (and in particular, The Gourds cover of the preeminent ‘Gin and Juice’.) I always thought gin and juice as an adult beverage sounded, frankly, like an ass combination. Many years ago, when I was employed at a bar, I had a regular customer who frequently ordered horrible sounding things to drink. One time he asked me to microwave several drams of well Scotch until it was near boiling. On a different occasion, he requested a Tanqueray and cranberry juice – I assumed that he meant the Tanqueray Sterling vodka and brought him that – which, upon tasting, caused him to recoil in disgust before he demanded that I remake the cocktail with gin. Revolting, I thought.
But then this happened. It was 1:30 in the afternoon and I needed to start my cocktail hour early. I knew vodka was delightful when blended with the grapefruit, but as I was out of vodka and had to improvise. I took a risk and substituted one clear liquor for another and voila! A gin-y version of the Greyhound was born. It was delicious, believe.
